Just a quick side note on the currency in Laos. The local currency, the Kip, is not particularly strong. As a result, people barter in Kip, Thai Baht and US dollars. Which means if you pay for something in one of those currencies, you may get back any combination of the three. Thus, carrying a calculator and knowing the exchange rates is essential.
