Scam avoided
A note in our guidebook warned us to beware of scams when we took a taxi from the airport in Hanoi. In order to avoid the scams, the book suggested that travelers get an "official airport taxi" for a flat fee, show them the address/guesthouse name you want to go to and they will take you there. That's what we did. The airport taxi driver was to take us to a guesthouse called Golden Wings (we had a card from the place with a map). As we arrived in the Old Quarter, the car stopped at some random guesthouse and a man opened the door and said, "welcome to Golden Wings, we are full, but I have a guesthouse up the street with a room for you." We looked around and saw that not only were we at the wrong guesthouse, but we were on the wrong street all together. After a moment, we shut the door and insisted the that taxi driver to take us to the real Golden Wings. He did. And we avoided the scam. We wonder how many people do not.
Welcome to Hanoi.
